Experimental results for performance evaluation of CW radar with double modulation
Abstract
Test data from trial operations with a double modulation CW radar system capable of ranging, leakage suppression, elimination of close-in clutter at the receiver, and high SNR performance are reported, along with system design features. Details of the phase modulator, balanced mixer, amplitude modulator, code and video amplifiers, pseudo-random sequence generator and shift register hardware features are provided. Measurements were made of the frequency spectrum emitted and the tangential sensitivity. Two combinations of phase and frequency modulation were examined, as was the amplitude spectrum at the code demodulator, which provides the range data. The results confirm the capability of high range resolution, leakage suppression, and better sensitivity in comparison with a doppler receiver.
