Fault detection/diagnostics for the Intelsat VI SS-TDMA subsystem
Abstract
This paper describes the fault detection and diagnostic requirements for the satellite switched time division multiple access (SS-TDMA) subsystem of the Intelsat VI satellites and evaluates the available alternative schemes. An on-board monitoring scheme which involves sequential injection of an out-of-band CW signal into the input ports of the microwave switch matrix (MSM) of the SS-TDMA subsystem, is presented. The on-board scheme is capable of identifying a large number of possible failure modes by detecting and monitoring the out-of-band carrier at the MSM output ports. Alternative ground-based methods for fault diagnostics are also identified. Possible failure modes of the elements of the SS-TDMA subsystem, diagnostic features of each scheme and their operational constraints are discussed.
