Analysis and testing of the thermal properties of space battery cells, phase A
Abstract
Measurements of heat dissipation or heat flow rate from the cell to the environment were performed in an isothermal calorimeter where the cell was subjected to defined charge-discharge conditions. The measuring technique, calibration procedures and calorimeter set-up are described. Results obtained using different types of NiH2 and NiCd batteries are presented. Calculation and experimental measurements of thermal capacity were also performed. The measurement accuracy is discussed showing that the instrument accuracy is 1.13% rms for heat flow measurements and 2.04% rms for thermal capacity measurements.
