Advanced SATCOM - State-of-the-art technology in operational service
Abstract
Attention is given to SATCOM's incorporation of novel technology in both its communications payload and the spacecraft bus. A new high gain shaped beam antenna increases gain over the service area while retaining the frequency reuse scheme that involves overlapping, cross-gridded reflectors. In addition to improved channel frequency response from lightweight elliptic function multiplex filters, the replacement of traveling wave tube amplifiers by solid state power amplifiers in the transponder offers improved linearity and higher reliability for long operational life. Simplified multiplexer and antenna feed networks are being introduced to reduce weight, and commandable spacecraft roll offset will permit in-orbit antenna pointing optimization.
