Photochemical generation of the optoacoustic effect
Abstract
The properties of the optoacoustic effect produced by the photodissociation and recombination of chlorine were studied. An acoustic response was observed both from the time-delayed recombination of the fragments and from the prompt signal due to photofragment recoil and change in mole number of the gas. The data were fit to theoretical expressions and found to agree well with published rates and bond energies. In addition, calculations were performed to determine the nature of thermal noise in photoacoustic cells. Finally, a prediction of interference in the fluorescence from molecular photodissociation was made.
