Validation of the in-orbit checkout of the IRAS gyroscopes using computer simulations
Abstract
The simulation tool is able to validate the in-flight test method. The simulations prove useful in debugging the in-flight calibration maneuvers. For example, the pointing observation had to be revised because computer simulations revealed that slew settling effects were erroneously neglected. The simulations are also useful in debugging the in-orbit checkout ground evaluation fill-in formats, which were deducted from the in-flight calibration approach description, as well as the designed method of test evaluation. It is also found that attuning the IRAS attitude control simulation program package to the in-orbit checkout ground evaluation objectives is more time consuming than expected. The simulation results are seen as a suitable means of mission operations training during preparation of the flight phase.
