Flow of a layer of a stratified ponderable fluid past a cylinder
Abstract
The problem of the motion of a circular cylinder in an initially concentric layer of an ideal incompressible fluid surrounded by an infinite ideal incompressible fluid of different density in a gravitational field is solved in the linear approximation. The problem is reduced to an infinite system of recursion differential equations describing the deformation of the layer boundary and the buoyancy of the center of gravity of the internal fluid. A general expression for the force acting on the moving cylinder is obtained. The system of equations is solved numerically using a computer.
