Cylindrical waves in a cold electron plasma
Abstract
The flow of an electron gas in a cold quasi-neutral plasma is investigated analytically. In these conditions, the ions remain stationary due to their larger mass and the electrons are mobile. The analysis of Khasanov (1977), in which plane waves were examined as solutions of the hydrodynamic equations, is extended to the case of cylindrical waves and their conditions of existence. The equations are related to polar coordinates, and solutions dependent only on the radial distance r are sought. It is shown that cylindrical waves can exist, and that the initial velocity b(xi) plays a significant role.
