The RTJ1200 video amplifier. Investigation of low noise, low distortion amplifiers for low source impedance
Abstract
Amplifier circuits for a video recorder were studied. Integrated circuit or hybrid modules capable of meeting the noise and harmonic specification are not available. Designs employing discrete transitors and integrated circuits were investigated using specially prepared test equipment. By suitable choice of input transistor and careful circuit design, the required 3dB noise figure can be met. A standard test circuit was employed to prepare a preference list of transistors to aid this choice. The second and third harmonic specifications of -90dB could not be measured with the test rig. However, figures of -80dB are observed for these parameters on different amplifiers. The most promising design employs a complementary pair common emitter stage.
