Digital television transmission: The 34 Mbit/s PAL investigation
Abstract
The use of digital techniques for transmission has well known advantages. However, transmission of video signals in digital form is economically attractive unless bit rate reduction methods are used. Suitable methods are reviewed and three of them discussed in greater detail. The use of these methods is illustrated by the description of a system which conveys a broadcast quality video signal, together with two high quality sound signals and other ancillary services, within a total bit rate of 34 Mbit/s.
