Development of design analysis methods for new materials
Abstract
The use of design formulas, design charts, and computers for the design of polymer and composite parts in the automobile industry is discussed. Production and prototype applications demonstrate that plastics and composites are viable materials throughout the vehicle. The necessary level of design analysis depends on component criticality, and the level of optimization required. Although plastics and composites design require acceptance of advanced ideas or procedures, individual applications usually involve only one or two of these factors to a significant degree. Traditional design calculations for metals can be applied directly to plastics and composites, but this procedure has uncertain validity. Design calculation methods exist for most nontraditional aspects of plastics and composites behavior.
