Two-frequency tunable laser
Abstract
The design and operation of a tunable two-frequency sandwiched dye laser are reported. A solution of 5 mmol/l of rhodamine 6G (index of refraction 1.36) forms a 1-2-micron-thick layer between two trapezoidal fused-quartz prisms (index of refraction 1.46) and is pumped by either a 200-300-kW 7-ns-pulsed 337.1-nm-wavelength nitrogen laser or the second harmonic of a 105-kW 15-ns-pulsed YAG:Nd(3+) laser. Rotating mirrors are mounted at the exits of the cell to reflect the beam back into the cell, and adjustment of the mirrors permits tuning of the two-frequency output. Performance parameters measured include power efficiency 10-15 percent, wavelength range 572-605 nm, and laser linewidth 10-500 pm.
