Investigation of the exact solutions of the equations of an electrostatic beam
Abstract
A theoretical study is made of potential electrostatic streams which satisfy the thermionic-emission conditions on a cathode. The investigation is carried out in Cartesian, cylindrical, spiral cylindrical, and spherical coordinate systems. It is shown that among plane, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional electrostatic streams there exist flows with strong transverse compression of beams focused into a narrow ray with vanishing transverse velocities. An asymptotic theory for such flows is developed which, in combination with numerical methods, gives a complete description of this phenomenon.
