The automatic station Astron
Abstract
The Soviet satellite Astron, launched on March 23, 1983, is designed to make astrophysical observations of galactic and extragalactic radiation sources. The basic objective of the station is to acquire new information about the nature of stars and other celestial bodies, with a particular emphasis on stellar chemistry. Astron contains two systems of scientific instrumentation: (1) a two-mirror UV telescope, a UV spectrometer, and a field-recognition camera; and (2) an X-ray spectrometer unit. The instrumentation and scientific objectives of Astron are briefly described.
