An approximate method for solving the problem of fluid vibration in cavities of revolution
Abstract
An efficient method is proposed for determining the natural frequencies and the vibration modes (including higher modes) of fluids in cavities of revolution. The method is shown to be applicable to cavities of large aspect ratios and to cavities in which the free surface area decreases with the increasing relative depth of the fluid. In certain cases, the method proposed here yields a sequence of eigenvalues that tend to the lower limit. When combined with the variational method which provides an estimate of the upper limit, the method makes it possible to obtain bounds on the actual natural frequencies of the fluid.
