Inclusive Photon Spectra from Decays of the UPSILON(3S)
Abstract
The CUSB detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring (CESR) has been used to study inclusive photon spectra from decays of the (UPSILON)(3S). From a sample of approximately 37,000 hadronic events observed on the (UPSILON)(3S) resonance, a branching ratio for the decay (UPSILON)(3S) (--->) (gamma)(chi)(,b)(2P) is derived and the average energy of the monochromatic photons from the decay to the (chi)(,b)(2P) states is calculated. It is found that the electric dipole (E1) transitions of the (UPSILON)(3S) constitute a large fraction of all possible decays of the (UPSILON)(3S). The center-of-gravity of the (chi)(,b)(2P) is determined to be about 100 MeV below the (UPSILON)(3S) mass. Branching ratios are also determined. for the following reactions: (UPSILON)(3S) ( --->) (gamma)(chi)(,b)(2P) (--->) (gamma)(gamma)(UPSILON)(2S), (UPSILON)(3S) (--->) (gamma)(chi)(,b)(2P) (--->) (gamma)(gamma)(UPSILON)(1S), (UPSILON)(3S) (--->) (gamma)(chi)(,b)(1P). *National Science Foundation NSF PHY 81-07116.
