Magnetothyristor pulse generator for pumping copper-vapor lasers
Abstract
Preliminary results are reported concerning the development of a new system for pumping copper-vapor lasers using a magnetothyristor pulse generator. The main advantages of this generator over the thyratron generator are relatively small size and a substantial useful service life at a reasonably high efficiency. An important disadvantage of the generator is that the ballast resistor used to match the generator to the load reduces the overall efficiency of the generator to about 40 percent. If the matching problem can be solved without using the ballast resistor, the efficiency of the system could in principle be increased to a point limited by magnetization-reversal loss in the cores, presumably 60-70 percent.
