The motion of a top along a plane in the presence of friction
Abstract
The behavior of a top whose center of gravity is displaced relative to the axis of symmetry is studied. It is shown that a cycle of beats occurs. This effect is uncovered using numerical methods for motion with friction and analytical methods for motion along a smooth plane. The results obtained are found to agree with experiments. The presence of friction forces does not have a qualitative effect on the beats.
