Phase matched optical dielectric waveguide using the artificial anisotropic structure
Abstract
An artificial anisotropic waveguide consisting of an isotropic dielectric slab waveguide loaded with dielectric strips in the direction parallel to the wave propagation is proposed. A numerical analysis based on the mode matching method shows that it is possible to realize phase matching between the Ex and Ey modes. A phase matched waveguide was fabricated; and it was shown that phase matching between two orthogonal polarizations can be attained in a thin film waveguide with isotropic materials only and without any birefringent crystal. Combining this structure with a thin-film magnetic material makes it possible to construct a nonreciprocal mode converter and a mode-conversion-type optical isolator.
