EPONA, an energetic particle detector system for the Giotto mission to Halley's comet.
Abstract
The particle detector EPONA (Energetic Particle Onset Admonitor), designed for the Giotto mission to Halley's comet, consists of three telescopes, each incorporating two silicon surface barrier detectors. EPONA has 5 real time operation modes with high spatial (8 sectors) and temporal (0.5 s) resolution plus 4 storage modes, the choice of a particular mode depending on the solar aspect angle relative to particular telescope at different periods during the cruise phase. During the encounter, all three telescopes will be switched on. The present technical design and the scientific objectives of the experiment are examined.
