Calculations of level populations of helium in a recombining plasma
Abstract
An analysis is made of the level populations and inversion in a dense recombining helium plasma for conditions characterizing the expansion of supersonic helium-plasma jets into vacuum: an electron density of 10 to the 13th to 10 to the 16th per cu cm and an electron temperature of 0.1-0.5 eV. Calculations are carried out in the stationary-sink approximation and with allowance for the time dependence of the population of the 2(3)S metastable state; radiation-reabsorption effects are also taken into account. The behavior of the level-population inversion as a function of plasma parameters is investigated, and calculations are compared with existing theoretical and experimental results.
