Telemetric determination of time
Abstract
General principles of telemetry are surveyed and different methods of dating are reviewed, emphasizing spaceborne remote sensing applications. Onboard data multiplexing, signal transmission and reception, signal recording, and data processing (analog, PCM, PSK signals) are characterized. Time codes are discussed, i.e., PADTC, TRIG B and NASA 36, and TRIG A. Time readers are considered, including utilization, operating modes, and measured performance. Dating errors due to data analysis are identified. The necessity of onboard dating is seen; the SPOT dating scheme is cited as an example.
