Development of the High Capability Air Launched test vehicle
Abstract
The High Capability Air Launched (HICAL) vehicle is a high performance version of the ALPS/FLAME air launched probe rocket. The development of the HICAL concept utilizing an improved propellant in the Pedro first stage and a high burn rate solid propellant in the new second stage is described. The fire down operating mode results in flight thermal and loads environments which far exceed those encountered by normal missile systems and thus pose unique design problems which are addressed. Applications of the HICAL are discussed.
