Superresolution using an active antenna array
Abstract
The limited resolution of radar antennas is responsible for a number of errors. On the other hand, an active antenna array has the potential for a great improvement in the resolution. The present investigation is concerned with approaches for realizing this potential. Attention is given to resolution as a decision problem, a signal model, aspects of maximum likelihood estimation, aspects of suboptimum estimation, computer simulations, measurements involving two-target configurations, and the design of a multi-hypothesis test. It is shown that a resolution enhancement over the conventional 3-dB beamwidth is in principle possible, taking into account the use of an active antenna array.
