Multiple asteroids fly-by mission - A systematic search for trajectories
Abstract
Results of a statistical search for suitable trajectories for a spacecraft in order to fly by various asteroids in the time period 1987-88 are presented. Sequences were searched for minimal changes of velocity during an inspection of a maximum number of the 2000 known asteroids. Launch would be directly from earth with no gravity assist from another solar system body. Corrections would be implemented immediately after leaving one asteroid, and would direct the probe on the next. The problem is modeled as a succession of conic transfers from one celestial body to another. A unique solution was sought for the maximum number of possible overflights for specific launch dates, given a certain launch velocity and on-board fuel capacity. The model includes travel along a heliocentric reference orbit with a 40,000,000 km diameter, staying on a trajectory which can vary within fixed limits. Visits to at least 15 asteroids are considered as possible.
