Applications of semiconductor lasers in communications
Abstract
The characteristics and performances of gain-guided and index-guided lasers are described and their applications to both analog and digital communications via glass fibers, one operating at 800 microns and the other at 1300 microns, are considered. Examples of both types of lasers are mentioned. The noises arising from the combination of laser and fiber are described, especially modal and reflection noises. Methods of reducing or eliminating these noises are discussed.
