Some interesting aspects of adapting a video tape recorder for the Shuttle
Abstract
A video tape recording system was required to record video information that could not be down-linked real time during the Shuttle flights. This paper describes the requirements and selection of the recorder that was used during the operational flight tests and the modifications that were necessary to make the recorder compatible with the Shuttle program requirements. The environmental testing and analyses that were used to certify the recorder for flight are described. A brief description is provided of the performance and use of the recorder in the first four missions. Some improvements that will be recommended for the next generation recorder that will be used in the Shuttle are listed.
