Shuttle Uplink Text and Graphics System
Abstract
The Uplink Text and Graphics System (UT & GS) will provide a real-time, high resolution uplink facsimile capability to the Space Shuttle Orbiter operations. This paper describes the two Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) hardware end items of the system. The ground based scanner images and encodes a single sheet original into a serial digital data stream. After multiplexing, uplink transmission, and demultiplexing, the onboard hardcopier decodes the input data stream and outputs a black and white copy. The system, which uses the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Ku-band uplink data channel, is scheduled to become operational in the second quarter of 1983.
