Advances and shortcomings in the calculation of inviscid flows with shock waves
Abstract
An introductory survey is presented of recent developments in the calculation of inviscid flows with embedded shocks and mixed subsonic-supersonic flow. It begins with an account of methods for solving the compressible potential equation, covering the inherent limitations, the approximate factorization and multigrid techniques, and unsteady as well as steady flows. A brief review of methods for the Euler equations, which admit accurate simulations of shock waves, follows. Finally, the advantages and shortcomings of the various methods are compared, with special attention to the simulation of shock waves. Other factors considered are overall accuracy, speed and practicability.
