Magnetosphere-ionosphere relationships
Abstract
The observations that have been made of large-scale field-aligned currents in the earth's magnetosphere are surveyed. Particular attention is given to the relationship between field-aligned currents near the high-latitude ionosphere and the interplanetary magnetic field. A model is proposed that makes it possible to calculate the spatiotemporal distribution of the field-aligned currents as a function of the components of the interplanetary magnetic field vector. The model is then used in analyzing satellite magnetograms obtained in the daytime cusp and the auroral zone.
