Concepts of 2.6/2.5 GHz mobile satellite communication system
Abstract
Domestic mobile satellite telecommunications concepts are described, with attention focused on mobile terminals operating in the 35 MHz bandwidth at 2.6/2.5 GHz. A system is considered for coverage of the 200 n mi area surrounding Japan, with service dedicated to ships under 100 tons. The satellite system would furnish 15 kbps voice communication, coded at 32 kbps. An all-digital MSK modulator provides spectrum expansion, lowers the necessary output power, and yields a message signal of a 1.2 kb burst. A total of 25 W of a total satellite power of 30 W is dedicated to voice messages by SCPC, and the other 5 W goes to message communication by TDM carrier. The capacity of the system is then 6000 voice terminals and 6000 message links. Techniques for accounting for errors, interfacing with the existing VHF ground system, and assuring antenna stability are discussed.
