The possibility of the acceleration of charged particles by laser radiation
Abstract
The paper discusses variants of the laser acceleration of charged particles based on the Cerenkov mechanism, involving beam modulation by a slow light wave. Consideration is given to the motion of charged particles in an accelerating transverse electromagnetic wave field, and to the slowdown of light waves. The analysis indicates that the most promising laser acceleration method may be the Cerenkov acceleration of particles in compressed or rarefied resonant gases.
