Boundary layers near free surfaces
Abstract
Interesting problems related to mathematical boundary layer theory arise in the study of free boundary layer flows. It is pointed out that the interface between liquid and gas represents the most typical example of a free boundary. The present investigation is concerned with the characteristics of nonstationary boundary layers on free liquid surfaces, taking into account the asymptotic solution of the problem of a rotating ring in the case when the viscosity approaches zero. Attention is also given to boundary layers arising in connection with the Marangoni effect, and problems of boundary-layer theory related to phase transitions.
