Penalty-finite element methods in mechanics; Proceedings of the Winter Annual Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, November 14-19, 1982
Abstract
The papers selected are intended to give an idea of the broad and diverse applications of the penalty function method and the mathematical and computational difficulties associated with its implementation. Papers are presented on the penalty method and reduced integration for the analysis of fluids, on incompressible finite elements which fail the discrete LBB condition, on the penalty finite element modeling of double diffusive systems, and on the finite element analysis of incompressible viscous flow by a variable penalty function method. Attention is also given to reduced first order differential equations with optimal control finite element penalty functions, to penalty methods for unilateral contact problems, and to a penalty finite element method for parabolic flow prediction.
