Shaped lens antennas
Abstract
In connection with increasing demands for extreme high frequency (EHF) technology, dielectric lenses have become viable candidates for EHF antennas. Lens shaping procedures provide a powerful technique for the design of low cost, light weight, and high performance lens antenna systems. It is pointed out that shaping techniques can be applied to design dielectric lenses for different applications. Based on different requirements, three different lenses were designed and fabricated. A description is presented of preliminary tests results which were obtained with the three lenses. The first lens was shaped to transform a standard sin u/u pattern into a Taylor type distribution. The lens was designed to operate at 44 GHz with a Taylor type aperture distribution, achieving both amplitude and phase control. The second lens was to meet the Abbe sine condition for wide angle scans, while the third type is a combination of the first and the second design.
