Present situation in development of automated machining systems in Europe and America
Abstract
The state of the art of machine shop automation in 1976 was reviewed. Systems based on numerical control are described. The survey shows that machining centers account for 75% of machining of parts with a nonrotary shape in automated machining systems. Rotary shape parts are mainly machined by numerical control lathes. Machining lines have from 2 to 10 stations. Transport systems for joining stations are either linear or ring-shaped. Roller conveyor plus pallet is the most popular transport line combination.
