Course in meteorological satellites. Part C: Applications and photointerpretation
Abstract
Chapters 15 through 17 of the course are presented. Satellite imagery taken during the severe frost of July 1981 is analyzed; short range synoptic weather forecasting of the freeze using data from the SMS meteorological satellite is described; low temperatures during the frost were mapped using infrared SMS data; and ground truth documentation of the frost is presented. The use of satellite data for numerical weather forecasting is compared to the use of data from a conventional weather station network. Interpretation of satellite imagery of the processes of cloud formation induced by free and forced convection; the formation of cirrus, altostratus, and cumulonimbus clouds; and the configurations and types of clouds associated with a typical midlatitude low pressure system are discussed.
