Earth resources techniques applied to planetary exploration
Abstract
User requirements for imaging the earth by satellite are used to consider the possibility of employing a preliminary system derived from those requirements to gather similar information on other planets. The requirements are matched with the capabilities of a planned satellite-borne, pushbroom imaging system, and the major results for one visible band obtained at a particular orbital altitude are determined. Results from the same imaging system whose orbiting at the same altitude over other planets in the solar system are compared to the results for earth, including data for the relative solar irradiance, planetary characteristics, and other information. Possible orbits, comparative signal-to-noise ratios, ranges of sun-synchronous orbits, and other information regarding possible operation of this earth-oriented system near other planets are found.
