Excitation of an infinite periodic structure by a local harmonic source with an imprecisely specified frequency
Abstract
Consideration is given to the excitation of an infinite periodic structure by a harmonic source. The distribution function for the modulus of the directivity pattern of the scattered field at a large distance from the source is constructed under the assumption that the frequency of the exciting field is a random variable with a specified distribution function. It is shown that if the distance from the source to the periodic structure is large in comparison with the period, the distribution function of the pattern better describes the scattered field than the directivity pattern. This is the case because the number of lobes of the pattern increases without limit as the source is removed to infinity.
