A maser operating in the middle part of the millimeter range
Abstract
The paper reports on the design, operation, and technical characteristics of an andalusite:Fe(3+) maser operating in the 35-45 GHz range. The design of the resonator system is examined, and the energy level scheme of the Fe(3+) ions in relation to the magnetic field is presented. The maser is characterized by a pumping power of 0.5 W, a noise temperature of not more than 25 K, and a gain of 20 dB in a 25 MHz band. These characteristics do not change with tuning in the 35-45 GHz band and make the maser suitable for radio-astronomical applications.
