Concerning convective and absolute instabilities in bounded media
Abstract
Various questions pertaining to convective and absolute instabilities are discussed, with reference to the principles of oscillator and amplifier operation. The self-excitation condition of a convectively unstable system is analyzed. It is shown that the concepts of convective and absolute instability tend to refer not to concrete systems but to the mode in which a given system operates, so that the system can be 'switched' from one mode to another by its parameters. Thus, in practice any amplifier can be 'switched' into the oscillation mode, and vice versa.
