Gain limitations in CO 2 lasers
Abstract
We have measured the carbon dioxide v3(00 0n) mode vibrational temperature ( T3) in sealed and flowing CO 2 laser discharges. Results confirm T3 saturation at high current. The observed behaviour is compared to theory using a comprehensive numerical model of the CO 2 kinetic system, and explained in terms of microscopic processes. The analysis is extended to the calculation of laser gain, and the relative importance of thermal and dissociative effects is elucidated.
