Are millimeter-wave systems affordable now
Abstract
Millimeter-wave systems, as compared with microwave systems, provide much improved spatial resolution, smaller size, lighter weight, and wider bandwidth while offering penetration capabilities through fog, clouds, haze, dust, and smoke where IR/EO systems have limitations. A number of advances illustrate the point that millimeter-wave technology is ready for system applications. However, in order to be useful, millimeter-wave systems must be cost effective as well as functional. The present investigation is concerned with the question of a production of millimeter-wave systems at affordable costs. It is pointed out that efforts have recently been directed toward the development of low cost production techniques for millimeter-wave devices and modules. Examples are beam lead devices, integrated circuits, and device packaging techniques. In an evaluation of recent and current developments, it is found that affordable millimeter-wave systems are about to be a reality.
