The use of forced Rayleigh scattering to study laminar and turbulent flows
Abstract
The paper discusses an experiment in which the fluid in a laminar or turbulent flow is marked by a thermal grid produced by a pulsed laser. Subsequent measurement of the distortion of the diffraction image of the grid is performed by a second laser and makes possible a direct determination of the two components of the velocity gradient field. Preliminary measurements in a plane turbulent Poiseuille flow show that the method can be applied to moments of the turbulent gradient field.
