Coupled internal waves in an incompressible viscous fluid
Abstract
Using the stationary phase method, the amplitude-phase characteristics of short internal waves formed in a viscous incompressible fluid are obtained to a linear approximation. The fluid has an exponential density distribution and there is a steady horizontal and vertical motion of the hydrodynamic doublet (distributed source and sink arranged along the path of motion). The asymptotic solution agrees satisfactorily with data from laboratory experiments conducted at distances of two to three wavelengths from a body moving steadily in the horizontal direction.
