The Inmarsat system
Abstract
The International Maritime Satellite Organization (Inmarsat) was established in 1979. The function of Inmarsat is to provide the space sector for a system to improve maritime communications, thereby assisting in improving communications for distress and safety of life at sea, the management of ships, provision of public correspondence services, and radio location capabilities. Although Inmarsat provides the space sector, the provision of coast earth stations is the responsibility of individual states. The organizational structure of Inmarsat comprises a Headquarters Secretariat under a Director General. During the initial phase the Inmarsat system will operate through the Marisat satellites existing over the three oceans. There will be a progressive transfer to a combination of Marecs and Intelsat V satellites by 1983.
