Solar cycle variation of the recurrence period of geomagnetic activity reflecting the solar rotation period
Abstract
The Ap index for 1932 to 1977 (almost fully encompassing solar cycles XVII to XX) is used to study variations of the recurrence period of geomagnetic activity as correlated with the solar rotation period. The recurrence period, corresponding to the effective synodic period of solar rotation, is determined from the first characteristic maximum of the autocorrelation function. The recurrence period and the associated autocorrelation coefficient are manifested in the complex periodic variation of geomagnetic activity. The possibility of predicting geomagnetic activity on the basis of the recurrence is discussed
