On the instability of thick accretion disks
Abstract
A general method, based on a variational principle, is developed for the study of adiabatic oscillations in a gas cloud with negligible selfgravity, rotating in an external gravitational field. Second order virial equations are obtained. As an example, the formalism is applied to disk models with an equation of state wherein p is proportional to rho to the 4/3 power; such disks turn out to be unstable.
