The solar X-rays and the sudden phase anomalies (SPA).
Abstract
The phase variation of VLF radio waves which monitor the ionospheric plasma below 70 km and the solar X-ray flux in the spectral region below 3 A are used to study the ionospheric D-region during a solar flare as well as the solar flaring region itself. A simple model of how the solar ionizing radiation interacts with the terrestrial atmosphere is developed. The applicability of this model to observed events is evaluated by comparing the calculated values with those obtained by simultaneous measurements of a phase variation and the corresponding solar X-ray burst.
