The CNES 'STAR' project
Abstract
The STAR space relay system is quite similar to the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). Both systems consist of only one ground station which is linked with a space segment of one or two operational satellites. Future tendencies in orbit control missions are considered and limitations of the 2GHz network under development by CNES are discussed. Attention is also given to the location of the STAR satellites in geostationary orbit and the missions which could be performed via the STAR satellites. The conduction of an investigation is being considered regarding the possibility of controlling orbit transfer phases for geostationary missions so as to eliminate the need for overseas ground stations.
